Short - City of Vallejo looking at more cuts

downmarketTo quell a budget shortfall of $18 million dollars in the upcoming year, in addition to a variety of cuts being considered across the board the likelihood of a reduction in force action becomes greater. While not set in stone, hearings on the upcoming fiscal year budget in addition to several workshops will probably lead to 20-30 positions being eliminated.

Why is this important? So far, Vallejo is the largest city in the state of California to file for bankruptcy protection (2008).

Fort Lauderdale: Layoffs: Broward School District - More Teachers Face the Axe

layoffTeaching is a hard enough job, and it used to be a secure one. As evidence we have word of another pending layoff for teachers, this time in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Broward School District reports today that they will layoff as many as 400 teachers. Reported unemployment isn’t everything. Everyone seems to have a different definition for unemployment and how that number is reached. Sun Microsystems to layoff workers

Looks like the tech sector is taking another hit. Sun Microsystems has announced a further reduction of 1,500 workers from it’s payroll worldwide. This represents an 18% reduction in staff. Read more about this Sun Layoff


General Motors - Layoff Notices to White Collar Workers

It’s not just line workers being affected by the economic slow down in the automotive industry anymore. On Tuesday March 24th, white-white collar workers at General Motors Corp were informed that their jobs were being eliminated next week. While this cut is reportedly only 160 positions, mostly engineers and support staff at the Warren Technical Center in Warren, Michigan, it comes as a part of nearly the nearly 3000 US jobs lost throughout the US for the automaker, and 47,000 around the world. Boeing gives 60-day notice to employees in March

As a part of a projected 10,000 jobs across the company some 900 Boeing employees are expected to receive 60-day layoff notices.  Of this latest group of layoffs 700 are from jobs in the Puget Sound region. Read more


Caterpillar to pink slip over 2000 more employees - layoff news

It would appear that Caterpillar, one of the global leaders in construction and mining equipment, is announcing another round of layoffs this March. Even with emerging markets in developing countries in need of equipment produced by Caterpillar, the plummet of mineral and metal prices has forced companies that would usually order gear to put those plans on hold. One Seattle Newspaper goes electronic only - Seattle Post Intelligencer

down graphHearst Corp, owner of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, has decided to close the doors of the print operation and turn it’s publication strictly to it’s website. The historic move, the first major newspaper to do so, will occur after 146 years of delivering the news to the people on paper. Last year the paper posted a loss of 14 million dollars. Tracking the Cisco News for Layoffs

Cisco, a tech company based in San Jose California, completed a wave of layoffs at the end of February 2009 totaling approximately 2000 of the 65,000 employees worldwide, 250 of which were at the headquarters. (more…)
